Honey FAQs

Every jar has a story. Here are answers to your questions about our bees, our local wildflower honey and ordering from Stone Age London.

About Our Bees & Beekeeping

Where do your bees come from?

Every jar of Stone Age London honey begins with a rescue. We gently gather honeybee swarms needing a new home across South East London, from Greenwich and Beckenham to Woolwich. We bring them to our home apiary in Greenwich, where they can settle, thrive and do what they do best.

Where do the bees forage for their nectar?

Our bees forage across South East London parks, gardens and urban green spaces. A wide variety of local wild and cultivated blooms gives our honey its complex and distinctively local flavour.

What is your approach to sustainable beekeeping?

We work with nature, not against it. Our approach is rooted in patience, care and slow artisan beekeeping. We harvest in small batches, putting bee welfare first and leaving colonies well provisioned.

“Not every bee makes the headlines, but every insect shapes our world.”

How do you manage hive health and treatments?

Keeping our colonies healthy is a top priority. Our beekeeping approach includes using Apivar once a year in September, after removing the honey supers for the season. We are also exploring ways to reduce reliance on treatments and documenting work with a dedicated experimental hive.

What is beekeeping in London like?

London’s parks, gardens, window boxes and allotments offer a diverse range of flowers for bees. We care for our colonies at our home apiary and harvest and pack our honey with care.

About Our Honey

Is your honey raw and unfiltered?

Yes. Our wildflower honey is harvested in small batches. It is raw, unfiltered and unheated, with no additives, preserving its natural character and full depth of flavour.

Why do the colour and flavour change throughout the year?

The colour and flavour reflect the changing seasons and the flowers available to our bees. Spring honey tends to be lighter and golden, while later harvests can be richer amber or darker. Every harvest tells the story of a particular season, and no two are exactly alike.

What sizes are available?

Explore our 227g / 8oz jar and 454g / 1lb jar online. Please check each product page for current prices and availability.

Our larger 1kg / 2.20lb jar is available exclusively in store at Village Greengrocers Charlton.

Why does honey crystallise, and has it gone off?

Crystallisation is a natural process in honey. Over time, glucose forms crystals, changing the texture from runny to firmer or grainier. This does not, on its own, mean the honey has spoiled, and crystallisation alone does not prove purity or raw status.

If you prefer a runnier texture, gently warm the jar in a bowl of warm water, avoiding boiling water.

How should I store my honey, and does it expire?

Honey keeps well when stored properly. Keep the jar tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Use a clean, dry spoon and avoid introducing moisture. Follow the storage advice and best-before information on your jar. Crystallisation is a natural change in texture.

How can I enjoy your honey?

Try it drizzled over toast or yoghurt, stirred into tea, used in baking or enjoyed straight from the spoon.
