As we embark on our ceaseless quest to minimize our ecological impact, we fortuitously encountered the remarkable Colchester based artisan potter Jessica Perry - otherwise known as JP -

The Beginnings

My pottery journey began on 1st March 2022, when I started attending evening classes with a local potter; learning fundamental skills, such as pinching, coiling, slab building, and - of course - throwing. It ignited a passion within me, which has been burning ever since.

Up until then, I never would have considered myself to be naturally “artistic”. I reserved that term for those who could paint or draw or write poetry, even. I was unaware of quite how therapeutic it could be to let your mind go quiet, whilst in the process of creation.

What sparked her passion for pottery?

Every artist has a defining moment that ignites their creative spark. For me was the mesmerizing dance of clay on the potter's wheel, the tactile sensation of shaping something beautiful and functional from a formless lump. It was as if I had discovered a hidden language, spoken through the hands and the heart.

From assistant to virtuoso: The evolution of skill

By May 2022, Jessica found herself immersed in the enchanting world of pottery as a studio assistant for a local pottery studio. Little did she know that this would be the beginning of a transformative journey, where clay, glaze, and kilns would become her closest companions. Over the next 12 months, she dedicated countless hours to honing her craft, practicing the art of throwing even in her spare time.

As the months passed, Jessica became more adept at coaxing shapes from the clay. She learned the delicate balance between pressure and finesse, the art of centering the clay on the wheel, and the secrets of creating symmetrical vessels. Each piece she crafted was a testament to her growing expertise and dedication.

But it wasn't just technical skill that flourished during this time. Her artistic vision expanded, fueled by the rich tapestry of experiences and influences she encountered.

A journey of self-discovery

Through the journey with clay, Jessica discovered more than just a passion for pottery. She unearthed a deeper understanding of herself and her place in the world. The act of creating became a form of meditation, a way to connect with my innermost thoughts and emotions.
Each piece she crafts carries a piece of her soul, a reflection of her unique perspective. Taking inspiration from the natural world, capturing the essence of a blooming flower or the graceful curve of a bird's wing in her pottery.
The pottery studio became Jessica's sanctuary, a space where she could fully express herself and find solace in the transformative power of art.

Embracing the future

As the months turned into a year fast forward to June 2023, and it was time for a new adventure. Over the summer, I worked hard to refine my style and develop my technique. For me, pottery is a slow, natural, sacred craft. Taking time to appreciate the whole process, and enjoying what I make. Currently, I am focusing on small batches, and allowing my pottery journey to flow in whatever direction feels right for me. I‘ve often heard the saying, “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” - and now I finally understand.
